Creating Sacred Space

Shamans always begin healing ceremonies by opening sacred space. In this space we leave behind the affairs of ordinary life, the bustling world of meetings and schedules, and prepare to meet the divine. Sacred space allows us to enter our quiet inner world where healing takes place. Within sacred space our burdens become lighter, and we can be touched by the hand of Spirit. After we finish our healing work, sacred space must be closed by again acknowledging the four directions, Heaven, and Earth.

Sacred space is a healing sphere that is pure, holy and safe. I imagine it as a shimmering cupola above the area where I do my healing work. Everyone within this space is protected. Sacred space creates an environment where our defenses can be lowered, where we can explore our soft, tender underbelly. Sacred space also gives us access to the luminous healer-the medicine men and women who assist us form the Spirit world.

You can create sacred space and summon the healing power of nature anywhere on Earth. You can use it while your own prayer reveals itself to you.

The shaman’s covenant with Spirit is that when she calls, Spirit answers. Powerful medicine people from the Spirit world appear in the form of luminous beings who assist us in our healing work.

You can employ a smudge stick of sage or a little scented water if you like. Shamans throughout the world accompany their prayer by fanning smoldering sage or incense with a feather in the appropriate direction they are addressing, or holding their hand up to the sky and saluting each cardinal point. You will need to determine the points; ideally this is done with a compass, but a close approximation based on your knowledge of the landscape is fine.

Begin by facing South. Smudge or blow the scented water to the South, then hold up your hand, palm facing out. Recite the first verse, calling upon serpent. Face each direction in turn as you repeat the process. Touch the Earth and look to the Heavens when directing your prayers there.

Prayer for Creating Sacred Space

To the Winds of the South

Sachamama, hatun Amaru, Great Serpent Mother of the waters, the rivers, the galaxies, and the roads that bring us together, come wrap your coils of light around us
Teach us to shed the energies of the past that no longer serve us, the way you shed your skin, all at once
Show us how to walk softly on the Earth, in the beauty way
So that all we touch and create, we touch and create in beauty

To the winds of the West
Otorongo, Mother Sister Jaguar
Come protect our medicine space, devour those energies which do not belong to us
Teach us your ways beyond fear, beyond anger, beyond death, beyond guilt, beyond shame, beyond all the mythologies and beliefs that no longer serve us.

Teach us to be impeccable, luminous beings
Peaceful warriors who have no need to engage in battle, internally or externally, but instead are able to support ourselves in asking for and receiving what we desire, so that we can leap into who we are becoming and so that we create from a place of love

To the winds of the North
Grandmothers, Grandfathers, Ancient Ones, Ancestors and Guardians of this Land
Come to us, teach us your ancient wisdom and the wisdom to come, we honor you who have come before us and will come after us; help us to remember that ancient wisdom directly; come warm you hands by our fires, whisper to us in the winds
Siwarkenti, hummingbird, teach us to drink of the nectar of life, even when the contrast is great and the journey seems difficult or long, help us to do that which seems impossible, just as you do
So that we create from a place of joy and a sense of timelessness

To the winds of the East
Hatun Kuntur, Great Condor, Apuchin, Huaman, Eagle, Macah
Come to us from the place of the rising Sun, the place of our becoming
Teach us to soar high and see those mountain tops we have only dared to dream of before and help us to see with the eyes of the heart, to feel the guidance in our bodies
Give us the broadest perspective and clearest vision of our destiny
Take us under your wings, and teach us to fly wing to wing with Great Spirit
So that we create with self effort and grace

Pachamama, Santa Tierra Madre, Great Mother Earth,
We come here for the healing of all your children, beloved Mother
The stone people, the plant people, the two legged, the four legged, the creepy crawlers,
the finned, the furred, and the winged ones, all our relations that are here not only to sustain us and bring us beauty and joy, but to also teach us with their characteristics, their medicine, helping us along the way
Thank you Mother for sustaining us with your bounty, for supporting our healing work on your belly, and for always taking those energies which are too heavy for us and mulching them for us, so that we don’t have to carry them around any longer, so that we can be truly free to create extraordinary lives filled with joy, abundance, love, and support

Intitaita Father Sun, Mamakia Grandmother Moon, Hatun Chaska Star Nations, Star Brothers and Sisters, thank you for rising everyday showering us with your light, your cycles, your love, that makes life possible for us here, and for doing this unconditionally without judgment, teaching us to treat ourselves in the same way
Hatun Apu Kuna, Great Holy Mountains, Great Lineage, and Teachers of All times, thank you for helping us; and Ilaticha Wirakocha, Wakantanka, Great Spirit, Creator, God, Creator of all-that-is, you who are known by a thousands names and you who are the unnamable One that dwells within us and all around us in all forms
Thank you for bringing us together to sing the song of life one more dayto dance this dance of co-creation, to take creation beyond where it has been before, new levels of joy, abundance, and exhilaration
Thank you for holding us

Closing Sacred Space

You close sacred space by thanking serpent, jaguar, hummingbird, and eagle. Release their energies and allow them to return to the four corners of the Earth. To connect with the energy of one of the directions, do not close that direction. Instead call on that archetype to enter you and accompany you on your path. (I do this by turning to the East, for example, and instead of closing that direction I blow the spirit of that archetype into my client’s crown chakra. I imagine the spirit of eagle entering them and informing their lives.) Then thank Mother Earth and Father Sky.
